Residents spoke out Thursday during a public hearing in Belleville about a Wayne County hazardous waste landfill's application to expand capacity.

Wayne Disposal Inc. is seeking to increase its landfill capacity at 49350 North Interstate 94 Service Drive in Van Buren Township by 5 million cubic yards and to temporarily store hazardous waste in containers at the facility.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy; and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency hosted the hearing at Wayne County Community College District's Ted Scott Campus in Belleville.

Residents said they were worried the landfill could affect the environment and some were concerned about radiological material disposed of at the facility.
