SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WTVO) — The body of former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar is lying in state at the Capitol in Springfield today, allowing visitors to pay their respects until 7 p.m.
A memorial service for Jim Edgar will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Central Baptist Church in Springfield, and the service will also be live-streamed.
Jim Edgar, who served as Illinois' 38th governor from 1991 to 1999, was widely regarded as a steady hand in the state's politics.
He was the last Republican governor elected more than once in Illinois.
He ended the use of prison labor for state license plates, made Illinois one of the first states to require car insurance, and overhauled drunk driving laws.
Jim Edgar passed away on Sunday at the age of 79 after battling pancreatic cancer.
