BOWIE, Md. (DC News Now) -- The City of Bowie is undergoing a major project aimed at improving 6,000 streetlights.

Public works crews are installing a new underground conduit system that safeguards electrical wiring to shorten repair times for future outages.

Robert Holt, utilities superintendent for Bowie, says the project is necessary to keep residents safe.

“We really want to get this completed as quickly as possible so residents can feel safe about lights on their streets...also, the constant having to send repair crews...to the streets to repair things on multiple occasions. So we are hoping to get this done as soon as we can," Holt explained.
