PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — A judge determined Friday that a 28-year-old Maryland woman charged with murdering her 81-year-old grandmother will remain in jail without bond as she waits for her next court appearance.

Breante Thomas is charged with first and second-degree-murder in the stabbing death of her grandmother Helen Thomas . Breante Thomas' lawyer asked for a mental health and competency evaluation before the case continues, and the court agreed.

The court appearance stemmed from a violent altercation Sunday, just before 2 p.m. Prince George’s County Police were called for a welfare check at Helen Thomas' home in the 500 block of Bonhill Drive. Officers found the 81-year-old woman and an unidentified male relative, both with stab wounds.
