When faced with losing their job, many people prefer to wallow in a pint of beer, book a trip or stay at home and take a long nap.

When Matthew Edwards, 33, lost his job in 2023, he decided to go another way — clean up a nearby area that had always been cluttered with litter.

“Rather than continue to doom scroll, looking at art, looking at job listings or playing video games … I decided to go out and do something positive for the community and try and brighten my own day,” he said. He picked up some garbage bags, gloves and some pickers, and headed to Marlborough mall.

While he cleaned, he snapped before-and-after photos to share online.
