DENVER (KDVR) -- A child found a gun in their backpack on Friday morning at an elementary school daycare program in Aurora, according to Cherry Creek Schools.

The school district sent a letter to families, which said a student at Highline Community Elementary School "unknowingly had a firearm in their backpack," and immediately told a staff member.

Staff "immediately" took possession of the backpack without incident and contacted security and law enforcement.

The district said that law enforcement connected an adult to the incident and issued a summons for them to appear in court on related charges.
