This weekend, the Oakland Police Department’s six traffic enforcement motorcycle officers will be reassigned to patrol duties.

The department announced Friday that motorcycle officers who primarily focus on enforcing traffic laws, such as speeding and running red lights, will be assigned to patrol beats throughout the city to cover vacancies that are currently filled by overtime.

The news was first broken at a City Council meeting on Sept. 15 , during which Lt. Timothy Dolan said the department’s traffic enforcement unit would be disbanded at the end of the week.

“As you know, the police department is going through some issues now with staffing,” he told the council. “I can only predict that, maybe, collisions will go up with losing this enforcement unit.”
