An Ontario track star and his family have been granted permanent resident status in Canada after facing a threat of deportation to their native Jamaica.
Tamarri Lindo, 21, his parents and their three other children were informed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on Thursday that they will be allowed to stay in Canada, according to immigration lawyer Aidan Simardone.
In a voicemail message to CBC News on Friday, Simardone said the IRCC decision followed public pressure. More than 1,300 people had signed an online petition, organized by the advocacy group Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, urging the federal government to stop a deportation order issued for the family.
