SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — On Friday, a San Francisco judge rejected a motion by prosecutors to try the teenage suspect as an adult in the shooting of 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, the San Francisco Public Defender's Office announced.

The suspect, who has not been named publicly, allegedly shot Pearsall in the chest while attempting to rob him near San Francisco’s Union Square on Aug. 31, 2024. The suspect was 17 at the time of the shooting.

“The defense argued that this case did not meet the criteria for a transfer to adult court and called several character witnesses — including a Juvenile Probation Officer and teachers at Juvenile Hall — who testified to the young person’s progress and accomplishments since the incident in August 2024,” San Francisco Deputy Public Defender Bob Dunla
