Ban on courtroom electronics in First District follows judicial orders

The Sept. 12 announcement by the Dare County Sheriff’s Office that electronic devices will be banned from District Court courtrooms followed orders issued first by First District Resident Superior Court Judge Andrew Womble and then by First District Chief District Court Judge Robert Trivette.

While court is in session, the orders prohibit devices “capable of audio, video or still image recording, with internet access or capable of other telephonic communication…” with the exception of “law enforcement officers, officers of the court, and attorneys at law licensed to practice before this court.”
