Friday marks Prisoner of War and Missing in Action Recognition Day.
As the sound of horns filled the air and guns fired off in Memorial Park, dozens paid tribute to our heroes missing in action and prisoners of war.
"Their families and friends were robbed twice — not just of their loved one's life, but also of a solace that comes even in death," said Mayor John Ewing Jr.
Service members laid out the Fallen Soldier Table as a representation of the families and friends who are missing, symbolizing the experience for family members like Shirley Haase.
"My brother was Donald Carella. He went missing in Vietnam in December 1965," said Shirley Haase, whose remains weren't brought home until 2006 — more than 40 years later.
