Mackinac Island — U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told a crowd of Republicans in northern Michigan Friday night that conservative activist Charlie Kirk's assassination could represent a "sea change" moment for the country, providing a chance for people to "come together."

Noem, a prominent member of Republican President Donald Trump's administration, spoke on the opening night of the Michigan GOP's Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference inside the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. She said her speech in Michigan was the first one she had given since Kirk was shot on Sept. 10 while appearing on the campus of Utah Valley University.
