Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch on Friday trumpeted the latest gun seizure statistics, saying they contributed to record declines in violence.
So far, in 2025, police have seized over 4,000 illegal firearms in the city, bringing the total since 2022 to 23,700, which Adams and Tisch maintain has contributed to a 54% decrease in shootings and 34% drop in homicides since Adams took office.
The gun seizure data, coming at the time when Adams is fighting an uphill battle according to the polls for reelection, had the earmarks of a campaign event as the mayor stressed his administration’s success in driving down violent crime.
"Every one of the 4,000 guns seized represents a life saved, a family protected, and a community safer," said Adams in a prepared statement.
