Tomatoes stubbornly remaining green on the plant can be a nuisance, but gardening guru Monty Don has revealed a trick to ripen them indoors. Once they're off the vine, tomatoes continue their ripening process due to a gas called ethylene.
Fascinatingly, other fruits like bananas and avocados also produce this ethylene gas, which plays a crucial role in fruit ripening. This explains why commercial tomato producers often harvest the fruit whilst it's still slightly green, depending on the fact that these delicious delights will complete ripening on their journey to shops.
