WILLOUGHBY — The Willoughby South Rebels had just enough defense to hang on and beat the Maple Heights Mustangs on Friday, 7-6.
With alum and former Cleveland Brown Kareem Hunt on the sideline, Jayden Hardy outran Maple Heights’ defenders for a 68-yard touchdown reception that broke a scoreless game with 6:38 left.
“That play is called Chiefs, named for Kareem. So, he knew that when he saw it. So, he was fired up about it,” said Rebels’ head coach Matt Duffy, his team now 3-2.
The former Rebel was on hand to have his No. 3 jersey retired. Hunt spent most of the time on the sideline.
After the Rebels scored, the Mustangs had their best offensive series. Senior Mike Banks capped the drive with a 13-yard quarterback keeper. However, the two-point conversion failed and the Rebels led 7-6 w
