At the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Brazilian athlete Caio Bonfim won gold in the men's 20km race walk, despite losing his wedding ring during the race. Bonfim finished ahead of China's Zhaozhao Wang and Spain's Paul McGrath, who took silver and bronze, respectively.

"I lost my wedding ring in the third kilometre," Bonfim said. He expressed confidence that his wife would understand his loss, given his victory. "After taking silver in the 35km walk, my wife told me to believe I would win gold. I did not know I was in first place. I overtook the Chinese and Spanish athlete on the last lap but I thought I was second and accelerated to try to win a medal."

Bonfim's win marks his first international gold medal after competing in eight world championships. He reflected on his journey, stating, "This is my fourth world championships medal and I am honoured to be part of the same generation of athletes as (400m hurdler) Alison dos Santos. People in Brazil can now say, 'Caio Bonfim won medals as well.'"

He also shared his thoughts on his family, saying, "The oldest of my three children, Miguel, told me he missed me. I said that my success could compensate for my absence. I am here for him and I made sure my effort was worthy of him. I thought of him and all my three sons in the last two laps. I won this for them, for Brazil."

As Bonfim celebrated his victory, Australian athletes were also in action on the eighth day of the championships. Mackenzie Little is set to compete for gold in the women's javelin, while Rose Davies and Linden Hall will race in the women's 5,000m final.

Earlier in the day, Matt Denny qualified for the javelin final with the fourth-largest throw among morning qualifiers. In the women's 20km race walk, Rebecca Henderson and Lizzy McMillen finished 21st and 33rd, respectively, while Alexandra Griffin did not finish. In the men's 20km race walk, Rhydian Cowley, Declan Tingay, and Tim Fraser finished 20th, 23rd, and 39th, respectively.

The evening events include the heptathlon featuring Camryn Newton-Smith and Tori West, as well as several relay races. The men's 4x400m relay is scheduled for 8:35 PM AEST, followed by the women's 4x400m relay at 9:00 PM AEST, and the men's 4x100m relay at 9:25 PM AEST. The women's 4x100m relay will take place at 9:45 PM AEST, leading up to the women's javelin final at 10:10 PM AEST and the women's 5,000m final at 11:05 PM AEST.
