NEW YORK — Mets manager Carlos Mendoza best described center fielder Jose Siri ’s performance on Wednesday.

“He didn’t have a good day, obviously,” Mendoza said after the Mets’ 12-6 over the Washington Nationals .

Siri’s struggles on Wednesday were the latest chapter in what has been a brutal start to his Mets tenure. Once expected to solidify center field with his speed and defense, he instead has been plagued by defensive miscues and offensive futility.

His woes began in the third inning, when Nationals first baseman Josh Bell hit a line drive to left-center. Siri tracked the ball a long way, but the ball bounced off the inside of his glove and rolled away, allowing a run to score.
