Matt Beard, the former manager of Liverpool's women's team, has died at the age of 47. The club expressed their shock and sadness at his sudden passing, stating that their thoughts are with Beard's family and friends during this devastating time.
Beard was a prominent figure in women's football, having led Liverpool to back-to-back Women's Super League titles in 2013 and 2014. The club remarked, "Matt was not only an extremely committed and successful manager, he was also a person of real integrity and warmth, who will always be remembered with genuine fondness by everyone he worked with at the club."
He began his tenure with Liverpool in 2012, quickly achieving success. After his time at Liverpool, Beard managed West Ham's women's team, guiding them to the FA Cup final, and also held the top position at Bristol City Women. He had a brief spell with Chelsea's women's side before returning to Liverpool in 2021, where he successfully led the team back to the top flight by winning the Women’s Championship. He departed from the club in February.
Liverpool acknowledged Beard's significant contributions, highlighting the many memorable moments and achievements during his multiple tenures. Non-league club Eastbourne Borough extended their condolences to Beard's family, particularly to his brother Mark Beard, who is also a former manager. Dorking Wanderers also paid tribute, expressing their sorrow for the Beard family.
The Women's Super League shared their sympathies on social media, stating, "Everyone at WSL Football extends its deepest sympathies to the family, friends and loved ones of Matt Beard following news of his passing. Matt played an instrumental role in the growth of women's football and will be missed by everyone associated with the game. Rest in peace, Matt."
Over his career, Beard managed more than 350 games and was named FA WSL Manager of the Season in both 2013 and 2024, the latter year seeing him guide Liverpool to a fourth-place finish.
