Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says her government is prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure three provincial laws affecting transgender Albertans are implemented.
On her Saturday call-in radio show, Smith said she believes the laws can be defended in court, but lengthy delays in the legal process may mean Alberta will have to use the Charter’s notwithstanding clause to maintain its legislation.
“If it turns out that the court process may take years and years to resolve, then we may have to take that measure in order to protect kids,” Smith said. “That’s what we’re getting our internal lawyers to have a look at. … We haven’t made a decision yet, but that’s the conversation that we’re having.”
