Joline Hardisty spent 14 hours at the University of Alberta Hospital one day last December.

Her son, who was 19 years old at the time, had recently undergone appendicitis surgery at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. Hardisty said the surgeon informed them he was bleeding internally, but did not need another surgery to fix the issue since his levels were consistent. If her son began to show symptoms such fatigue or failed to improve, she was told to have him to see a physician.

Post-surgery, Hardisty said she noticed her son was sleeping too much and was feeling generally unwell. That prompted them to go to the U of A hospital — only to be met with a 14-hour wait, which ended with them leaving the hospital without having the issue resolved.
