Construction is set to begin on the Wangara waste transfer station, the first stage of the City of Wanneroo’s long-term waste management plan, as Tamala Park landfill nears capacity.
A contractor has now been selected by the council for the $4.6 million project, marking the first stage of the Neerabup Resource Recovery Precinct masterplan, approved last December.
The new waste transfer station will receive household waste and consolidate it into larger loads for transport to recycling or disposal sites, and is intended to reduce truck movements on local roads and cut greenhouse emissions.
Wanneroo mayor Linda Aitken said the project reflected the city’s long-term commitment to improving waste services.
“This is the start of a smarter way to manage waste across our city,” Ms Aitken said
