COLDWATER, MI – Shelda Gusteme stocks her store with green plantains that traveled 1,800 miles from the warm Caribbean to a rural Michigan town near the Indiana border.
The market, tucked into a strip mall, became the first Haitian store to open in Coldwater three years ago. It wasn’t long before another one selling imported goods opened three miles away – both giving a taste of home to hundreds of Haitians who have recently settled there.
