NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – This is a mother's mission to make sure her son is not forgotten and that his life continues to make an impact.

Eleven-year-old Nikhil Badlani was killed in a car crash when a driver ran a stop sign. His family started the Nikhil Badlandi Foundation in July 2011 to honor his memory.

Since then, the foundation's mission has grown. It works to raise traffic safety awareness and provide music and academic scholarships to underserved kids.

The “Stop for Nikhil Race” is their signature event, which raised $44,000 last year. Over the years, the foundation has helped create 37 traffic safety murals, $330,000 in initiatives, plus nearly $300,000 in scholarships.

But more than that, the group has successfully fought for new legislation, including expanded driver's education
