CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Two people died in a head-on, wrong-way crash on Interstate 464 early Sunday, Virginia State Police say.

A third person also remains in critical condition in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

The crash happened at 2:33 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 464 at exit 2, Military Highway, in Chesapeake.

A 2024 Ford Ecoline ambulance, owned by Midwest Medical of North Carolina, was driving south in the southbound lanes when it was struck head-on by a 2022 Lexus sedan that was traveling north in the southbound lanes, state police said.

Both vehicles caught fire.

The driver and passenger of the ambulance were taken to the hospital. The passenger, Stephen Michael Anderson, 53, of Trenton, N.C., later died of his injuries in the hospital.
