Last week, the U.S. Antimony Corporation (USAC) hosted a tour of the new Mohawk Antimony Mine for an impressive who’s who of Fairbanks political and business elites. There were state senators and representatives, folks from D.C. offices, Chamber of Commerce and Legislative Information Office type, among others.

The one group that was conspicuously absent, indeed the one group that was not invited, informed or wanted were the residents, homeowners, business owners and taxpayers who actually live within spitting distance of the Mohawk mine. These people — who have lived and recreated and raised families and paid property taxes in the area for decades — were not invited so they might learn about all the ways their property values, quality of life and peace of mind were about to be sacrificed
