Last week, the Gillingham administration launched Facebook ads proclaiming: “It’s Canada’s Democracy Week, Winnipeg!”

The post directed residents to “Subscribe to the Engage Winnipeg newsletter today” with the assurance: “Your voice matters — and your city is listening. Stay involved, stay informed, and help shape Winnipeg’s future.”

While the administration tosses around the word democracy, another word often gets tossed around when people actually try to take part in it here. It’s becoming a pattern: When citizens raise their voices about Gillingham’s policies and proposals, we’re told those people don’t matter — because they’re spreading “misinformation.”
