Michael King was supposed to be building.

Now hopes to simply get back on track.

He’s making perhaps his second-to-last start of the season on Sunday (11:10 a.m. on Padres.TV) and looking to put Tuesday’s start in the rearview mirror.

King allowed eight runs on 10 hits in just three innings. Four of the hits left the yard as the 30-year-old right-hander has given up six home runs in eight innings since returning from his second injured list stint.

King (4-3, 3.84 ERA) lost nearly three months to an issue with his long thoracic nerve earlier this summer and then another month to knee inflammation.

He threw 63 pitches in his first start back and just 57 on Tuesday in New York.

Nick Pivetta is the obvious choice to start the Padres’ postseason opener.
