Some people began lining up as early as 1 a.m. to get into the Charlie Kirk memorial at State Farm Stadium in Glendale.

Gates opened at least half an hour early, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

By then, around 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 21, a sea of red, white and blue, topped with dots of white and red, flooded the entrance to the home of the Arizona Cardinals.

The crowd filled Westgate plaza in Glendale hours before the doors to the neighboring stadium opened. The line snaked at least a half mile through Westgate and across north 95th Avenue to the west and north 93rd Avenue to the east. And that was only one of the lines.

The Arizona Department of Transportation reported thick traffic on all the main streets surrounding the stadium.
