Ontario's Special Investigations Unit says a 58-year-old man who was shot in an altercation with Windsor police Thursday afternoon has died.

The police watchdog, which investigates injuries, deaths and allegations of sexual assault involving police, says the man was armed with a gun and had previously fired his weapon.

According to what the agency said was preliminary information, at about 2:45 p.m. Thursday, a man told police that he wanted to harm himself. Officers showed up and found the man in the backyard of the home in the area of Stanley Street and Lillian Avenue.
