Holidaymakers are set for a significant uplift as plans for a second runway at Gatwick airport have been given the green light. After months of debates over noise pollution and transport links to the airport, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has finally approved the proposal. ‌

The £2.2 billion project, funded privately, will bring Gatwick's secondary "standby" northern runway into full use. If all goes according to plan, planes could be taking off from the new runway as early as 2029. ‌
