POJOAQUE, N.M. —
Pueblo police used a forklift to remove a man from a roof who was wanted on multiple felony charges.
There was a warrant out for the arrest of Albuquerque resident Moses Sparks, 41, and because Sparks was a non-native on tribal land, the Pueblo of Pojoaque Police Department charged him under the federal Violence Against Women Act.
The VAWA was first passed by Congress in 1994, and it has been reauthorized three times since then. It calls for enhanced sentencing of repeat federal sex offenders; mandated restitution to victims of specified federal sex offenses; and authorized grants to state, local, and tribal law enforcement entities to investigate and prosecute violent crimes against women, according to congress.gov.
