In the 1990s, the alternative band Garbage landed the plum gig as the opening act for Smashing Pumpkins, one of the biggest bands of the time.

Even though Garbage’s lead singer Shirley Manson wrote songs full of fiery conviction, she was often branded a studio creation masterminded by Butch Vig, the band’s drummer/producer famous for his work with Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana.

Thirty years later, Garbage is on tour in support of their eighth studio album, “Let All That We Imagine Be the Light.”

On Tuesday night, the band packed the Franklin Music Hall for its Happy Endings tour, with Manson giving a masterclass in holding an audience in the palm of her tiny Scottish hand.
