BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) -- As of the 4:00 p.m. update provided by the National Hurricane Center, NOAA Aircraft reconnaissance has determined that Gabrielle is now a Category 1 hurricane. The maximum sustained wind speed is 75 mph, meeting the minimum requirement for hurricane status.
This is now the second hurricane of the season, following Erin in August.
While the current motion of the storm is north-northwest, it is expected to make a rather dramatic right turn, keeping it in the Atlantic Basin. It does have the brief potential to intensify further as the storm currently sits in a favorable environment.
That said, no impacts are expected to the CONUS, but Bermuda may see some higher wave heights and should monitor the storm as it approaches the region.
