CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KCRG) - “Currently I don’t know if I’ll stay in Iowa,” Ryley Goebel, a senior at the University of Northern Iowa, said.

Goebel plays basketball at the university — but off the court, she got her passion for nursing after working at an assisted living facility for three years.

“I was originally biology and then I decided that with the new [nursing] program I was going to make the switch just because I loved interacting with patients and helping people,” Goebel said.

Pete Moris with the university said the school launched its nursing program last fall and expanded its engineering majors in response to shortages in the state’s workforce.

“Fortunately, about 70% of our UNI graduates actually take their first job in the state of Iowa,” Moris said.
