The poet Robert Frost wrote: “The afternoon knows what the morning never suspected.” I have paraphrased these words with: “The afternoon often holds surprises that the morning did not know existed.” Mr. Frost’s wisdom acknowledges that different stages of the day can be a metaphor for accumulation of experience and passage of time. Who doesn’t love surprises? Especially the good ones!

My son recently had a rough day at his job. Frustration was strong as he described the events leading to his consternation. Our conversation was early in the morning on a Friday. I used our mantra of “2 seconds” to pause as he was speaking before I offered any advice or sympathy. We do this to avoid my interruptions that may derail his train of thought as we are both pretty intense in our verbal conversation
