TEXARKANA, Texas – Mexican Independence Day was celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Texarkana on Sunday.

Father Justin Braun said the parish celebrates this holiday annually, and its weekend celebrations usually draw around 500 to 600 Hispanic members and their families and friends to enjoy the culture with Mexican food and music.

“It’s definitely well-known in the Spanish-speaking community within Texarkana, and one of the things we’re trying to do is continue to open up the hearts and minds of the English-speaking community to realize this is a culture, it’s very beautiful, very rich, and the food is obviously great,” said Father Braun. “But the celebration of their independence from Spain is much like our celebration of our independence from England. It’s an important day.”
