Two people killed in Portland apartment fire

PORTLAND, Maine (WABI) -Officials say two people were killed early Sunday in an apartment fire that broke out at a three-story building on St. Lawrence Street in Portland.

They say the Portland Fire Department responded to the fire just after two a.m.

All four units in the building were occupied at the time.

When crews got there they say there was heavy fire on the building’s back porch.

They say evacuation efforts were already underway when responders got there.

Firefighters found two people dead inside the apartment.

Their bodies were taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where autopsies will be conducted to determine the cause of death and confirm their identities.

The fire remains under investigation.
