NEWINGTON, Conn. — Newington police said a man was taken into custody in Stamford after he allegedly assaulted a woman and took two children from a home Sunday.

Police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a Newington home at 12:10 p.m.

Investigators learned that John Lacen-Romero, 36, allegedly assaulted a woman at the home before taking two children and placing them in a vehicle. Police said he then left the area.

Newington police worked with multiple law enforcement partners during their search for the children and the vehicle. Stamford police later found the vehicle, which crashed and became disabled after a short pursuit.

Police said Lacen-Romero is now in custody after an "extended standoff."

The children were taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
