LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

Family and friends of Robert “Tony” Broyles gathered at Iroquois Park on Sunday for a balloon release, celebrating his life and calling for answers weeks after he died while incarcerated at the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex.

“We just want to bring attention to this because his life mattered. He was somebody,” said family friend Shelby Paige.

Broyles, originally from Louisville, was found unresponsive in his cell during morning rounds at the end of August, according to officials. He had been scheduled for release on Sept. 9, his family said.

“I was supposed to be able to go pick up my husband,” said his wife, Ashley Elgin. “My kids were supposed to have a dad and they don’t have a dad anymore.” Elgin added, “I’m praying that we can at least get answers for us b
