A South Australian mother is encouraging parents to vaccinate children against the flu after her son experienced a permanent brain injury from a rare complication of influenza B.

About a month ago, three-year-old Clive experienced a swift decline after contracting influenza B.

He had seizures, temperatures of between 39.7 and 41 degrees Celsius, his heart rate was over 210 and his oxygen levels were low.

"Clive was completely well that morning, by 7:30 at night he was pretty much lifeless," his mother, Monique, said.

"The ambulance arrived at 8:30, we live a couple of hours away, by the time we got to the hospital, Clive was unconscious."

The toddler will now live with a permanent brain injury — the result of a rare complication of influenza B.
