More than a dozen organizations are banding together with elected officials in British Columbia to call for a provincial approach to protecting tenants from extreme heat — a shift from the piecemeal approach of municipalities addressing the issue individually.

While local governments are trying to use “some of the tools in their toolbox,” Jessica McIlroy, a councillor for the City of North Vancouver, said “they’re actually not as meaningful and as powerful as if the province addressed this issue.”
