HAMPTON, Va. — The Hampton Police Division is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened early Monday morning in the 4000 block of West Mercury Boulevard.

The incident happened around 4:14 a.m. at the Royal Farms gas station. Police say an officer, who was not dispatched to a call, went inside the business to grab food when he stumbled upon an armed robbery in progress.

"The suspects weren't aware the officer was arriving," said Hampton Police Corp. Shaun Stalnaker.

Stalknaker said in that moment, the officer was face-to-face with two suspects: a man with a gun and a woman standing behind a counter. The man allegedly pointed his weapon at the off-duty officer, and the officer fired his weapon, hitting the suspect.
