More roadwork, and likely more traffic delays for area motorists, are coming to Kapiolani Boulevard.

A project to replace the existing street lighting system on Kapiolani, from Ward Avenue to Piikoi Street, began Monday. The work is expected to last a year, city officials say.

The Honolulu Department of Design and Construction plans to conduct this work during weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding holidays.

The department says the installation of new lighting will improve visibility and safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists along one of the city’s main thoroughfares.

“DDC’s contractor began work on Monday,” DDC spokesperson Cindy Cromwell said Tuesday. “Crews made saw cuts into the roadway yesterday, which allowed trenching to begin today.”
