San Francisco experienced a significant earthquake early this morning, registering a magnitude of 4.6. The tremors struck at 2:56 a.m. local time, waking many residents across the city and nearby areas. The quake was strong enough to activate the MyShake early warning app, which alerts users about seismic activity.

Residents reported feeling "light" to "moderate" shaking, as defined by the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. This level of shaking is described as being felt by nearly everyone, capable of waking people from sleep and causing unstable objects to overturn. One local resident recounted the experience, stating that his house shook and dishes fell to the floor.

The earthquake's epicentre was located just a few streets away from the University of California, Berkeley campus. The US National Tsunami Center has confirmed that there is no tsunami threat following the quake.

The MyShake app, which is used throughout California, Oregon, and Washington, provides alerts powered by ShakeAlert®. It utilises data from the US Geological Survey and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services to keep citizens informed about seismic events.
