GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - New policies are in effect Monday at Green Bay middle and high schools in an effort to keep kids safe.

Clear backpacks are now mandatory for grades 6 through 12 after police say they found a gun in a student’s backpack at Preble High School nearly two weeks ago.

The school district started easing into the new policy last week. Anyone who didn’t have a clear backpack and their bag searched.

Monday the mandate goes into effect. Eleven thousand students will need a clear bag.

If students don’t have one, they’ll be given one to use for the day if one is available, or they’ll have to take out their necessary items and take them to their locker. Their bag will be returned at the end of the school day.
