A late interception proved decisive as St. Scholastica lost its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football opener, 30-23 at Augsburg on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Walt Hunting Stadium-Marv Heikkinen Field in Duluth.
St. Scholastica got off to a great start, taking a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Augsburg countered, taking the lead late in the second quarter on a 3-yard pass to Hermantown native Michael Lau.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Saints got the lead back on a 1-yard dive by Andrew Burgess. Augsburg hit a big play four minutes later to take the lead back, but a chip-shot field goal by CSS’s Jacob Andrews tied the game at 23 with 6:28 to play.
However, Augsburg hit an 82-yard touchdown pass on the next play from scrimmage to take the lead.
