EFFINGHAM COUNTY (WSAV) — For some in Effingham County, Monday could begin a knock at the door. Deputies and officials are fanning out across the county as a major statewide sex offender sweep kicks off this morning.

It’s called Operation Watchful Eye, and it's all about making sure offenders are where they’re supposed to be. Georgia has over 25,000 registered sex offenders, and this operation helps ensure they’re following the law.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) is one of dozens across Georgia taking part. Deputies were split up into teams before heading out to check on registered sex offenders throughout the county. The goal is to verify home addresses, enforce registry rules, and arrest anyone found out of compliance.
