Two people were killed in a fire in an apartment building in Portland, Maine, early Sunday morning.

Around 2:17 a.m. Sunday, the Portland Fire Department responded to a fire in a three-story, four unit apartment building at 43 St. Lawrence St., according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. All units were occupied when the fire started.

Fire crews encountered heavy flames on the rear porch of the building and confirmed that evacuation efforts were underway, the fire marshal's office said. As firefighters battled the blaze, two people were found dead inside the building.
