COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. —

A Des Moines firefighter who spent his final months advocating to help other firefighters battling cancer is now part of a national memorial to other fallen firefighters.

Mike Broderick served with the Des Moines Fire Department from 2007 until his death from cancer in January 2024. He was also a volunteer firefighter for the Norwalk Fire Department.

The 2025 Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial ceremony was held Saturday in Colorado Springs. It is hosted and maintained by the International Association of Fire Fighters. This year's honorees are members from the United States and Canada who died or whose names were submitted between Jan. 1, 2024, and Dec. 31, 2024.
