Now through October is tobacco curing season in western Kentucky, with smoke rising out of barns full of dark fire-cured leaf. It's also a season of increased false-alarm calls to fire departments, when people mistake the smoke of the curing process and think the barn is on fire.

To cut down on false fire alarms, Calloway County E-911 is creating a registry of local tobacco barns.

Farmers can now register their barns by listing locations, ventilation systems, and contact info, so that first responders have the details they need before arriving on scene.

All information will remain confidential and be used only by emergency services.

Forms are available at the Calloway County Sheriff’s office or at this link .
